Under his leadership, the group has evolved from a small grain trading shop into a globally respected rice export enterprise, while remaining deeply rooted in ethics, discipline, and long-term vision.
According to Dr. Prem Garg, legacy businesses carry a responsibility beyond profits.
“A family business does not survive because it is inherited. It survives because every generation adds value and strengthens the foundation,” he says.
From its early days of traditional grain trading, Shri Lal Mahal Group expanded steadily, guided by integrity and patience. Dr. Garg believes that leadership in a family business is not about authority, but accountability—to employees, customers, and future generations.
A defining feature of Dr. Prem Garg’s leadership philosophy is continuity. He works closely with his sons, the sixth generation, ensuring that modern education is balanced with Indian cultural values.
“Education gives knowledge, but values give direction. Without values, leadership has no soul,” he emphasizes.
People-centric leadership lies at the heart of the organization. Employees are treated as extended family members, not replaceable resources. Many families have worked with the group for three to four generations, reflecting exceptional loyalty and trust.
“When people feel respected and secure, they give their best without being asked,” Dr. Garg notes.
Leadership is truly tested during adversity. Between 2014 and 2017, the group faced significant legal and operational challenges. During this period, Dr. Garg experienced isolation and learned who his true supporters were.
“Difficult times show you who stands with you and who only walks with you during success,” he reflects.
Despite the hardships, resilience and faith helped him move forward.
“Problems are like thorns—they hurt for a moment, but the flower remains soft,” he often says. Dr. Prem Garg’s leadership journey demonstrates that sustainable success comes from values-driven decisions, resilience, and a vision that extends far beyond one lifetime.
